Trojans power past Lady Red Wolves 65-47

UALR used a strong second-half performance to turn a halftime tie into a 65-47 victory over ASU Saturday afternoon at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock.

Sophomore forward Chastity Reed paced the Trojans’ attack all game long with 27 points on nine of 24 shooting. UALR (9-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) won their 27th consecutive game at home in the process. The win was only the 7th for UALR in the 47 game-series between the two schools, but the fourth in the last six games.

ASU head coach Brian Boyer was disappointed after the game.

“Their physicalness got us standing around a little bit,” Boyer said. “I don’t think we were able to solve that.”

At halftime the game was knotted up at 31-31, after a well-played first period for both teams. The teams combined for just seven turnovers in the opening frame. The second half was all Trojans, out-scoring the Lady Red Wolves 34-16.

ASU did hold as much as a nine-point lead midway through the first, but UALR battled back to tie the game at halftime, thanks in large part to Reed’s 13 first-half points for the Trojans.

“With our team when some things start to go bad, we start to try and go one-on-one and take some shots, and then things just kind of snowball,” Boyer said.

Junior Jazmine Taylor led ASU in scoring with 13 points for the game.

With the loss the Lady Red Wolves (5-6, 0-2 Sun Belt) remain winless in conference play through their first two games.

Next up for ASU is a home date with Alcorn St. on Dec. 28 at Convocation Center.
